Topic: Shutdown

I recently installed a tetris game, which i think is for windows 98, on my system which runs windows xp.
When running the game, the title screen came up but nothing else happened. There was no response to any keystroke, even Control/Alt/Delete. The only thing i could do was switch off the power at the back of the computer. Is this harmful to the system, as opposed to the corect shutdown/restart sequence on the start menu? I have run the compatibility wizrd on the programme, the game will then run, but after shutting down the computer and re-starting, the title screen locks up again. Do i have to run the compatiblity wizaed each time ? Thanks.

Are you sure thats its not a DOS based game that you used to run on 98 ?
Shutting down like that may cause problems as XP likes to save stuff to itself while shutting down so that it can correctly restart with the current details for settings etc.
I dont think that it causes any hardware faults but repeatedly switching off like that can cause software problems with XPs self checking system

Thanks Sandra. I am not sure if its a DOS based game, but i know it runs on another sytem which has windows 98. Do i have any other options other than switching off the power, if the screen locks up and responds to nothing ?

Could you not right click on the EXE, Properties, Compatibility, tich the box select Win 98 / Win ME from the drop down box the click apply and close?

Does the reset button not even work?  That would force a reboot, and may be preferable to a direct power off.

I don't know if my suggestion will make the matter different or not.

uninstall the game completely, and after that you reinstall it. Not with autorun, this time. Do the following:

Open the contents of the game. Go to the "Installation" symbol. Right click on it, and open "property". There you'll find one option called "Compatibility". Choose 98 , and install it from there on that base.

Hope that will change the situation.
