Windows Messenger
« on: December 28, 2003, 15:30 »
I have a programme called windows messenger. When i open it a box comes up with some options. If i close the box, i get a bubble message saying that the programme is still running. Can i close it down as it might be causing some games to be minimised ?
I am not sure what the programme is used for.

Windows messenger is a program like ICQ, the only way I've been able to get rid of it is by downloading Tweak XP and selecting the uninstall option there  :) If you want to use it, try MSN Messenger instead, much better and 1/2 as annoying  ;D

In basic terms - windows messanger allows you to send messages between your computer and a friends - is a way of 'chatting' online.

I think its now bundled with windows operating systems - so as robo says you'll have to run tweakXP and uninstall it from there.

Hope that helps

if its version 4.7 (the version that comes with xp) you can uninstall it by

Click Start - Run

Type the following line:

RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

and that will remove messanger from xp!!

Windows Messenger 4.7 is a bad version anyway, as it starts up without you knowing about it, even when you tell it not to.  Version 5.0 is OK.

You may be able to stop it running by opening it, going to Tools > Options > Preferences and untick the box which says 'Run Messenger when Windows starts'.  If that doesn't work, you'll have to uninstall it.  There's a download which you can get here, which is the same method as Jon's above, but saves you typing it in.   :)

PS - Do you think it could be connected to games being minimised ?

Im not sure? but I have read some where that its not windows messenger but "Messenger" in the admin tools under services / messenger and it Quotes:

Quote
Transmits net send and Alerter service messages between clients and servers. This service is not related to Windows Messenger. If this service is stopped, Alerter messages will not be transmitted. If this service is disabled, any services that explicitly depend on it will fail to start.

Just a thought, you could disable it to see what happens, if it does need it then you can always renable it.

Ps if I'm wrong sorry

The version of windows messenger i have is 4.7, although i am sure i downloaded a new version a few days ago. I have opened it and set it not to run when windows starts, and not to run in the background. When i close it, there is no longer a box which tells me its still running.
I had hoped this was connected to my long running intermittent problem of games being minismised to the task bar and not being allowed to be restored, but it happened again.( Very frustrating ) - sometimes cured by re-boot, sometimes not.
On a friends advice, i went into Task Manager (Control/Alt/Delete) and in processes selected End Process for someting called ccapp.exe which i believe is to do with Norton Internet Security. This time the game ran fine, although it may be a coincidence. When i open Norton Internet Security, it will not let me turn it back on without re-booting which turns it back on automatically. Does this make any sense ?

Symantec?s Common Client Application for Norton AntiVirus 2003/4, Norton Personal Firewall 2003/4, and Norton Internet Security 2003/4. This task is, effectively, the "master" task in these products as its role is to call the different program features of the above products.  For example, if Auto-Protect and E-mail Scanning are enabled, then CCAPP makes sure that those programs are running.  If CCAPP is disabled, then Auto-Protect and Email Scanning will not run.

Recommendation :
Leave well alone ? this task is crucial to the proper working of your Norton 2003/4 security product.  We recommend, however, that you do a manual LiveUpdate every so often in order to pick up software updates (and not just virus definitions updates) as this task has had a few irritating bugs in the past.

The last time i ran i live update i got the message "Live Update has determined a prereleased or beta version of a 2003 symantec product. This version of the software is not supported by symantec and cannot be updated"
The Norton internet security came with my PC which i bought in October 2003.

I would be tempted to go back to where you bought the PC from.  I assume it was a legitimate source (not that I'd expect you to admit if it wasn't!), and if Norton was included in the price as part of the package, you should have the full working versions installed, not the 'beta' version, unless that's what was stipulated at the time of purchase.  Did you get any Norton CDs when you bought the PC?
