New worm hides behind Word
« on: June 02, 2008, 13:05 »
A new worm, Tixcet.A, is on the loose and attempting to pass itself off as a Word document according to security experts.

The worm, which was discovered by Panda Labs, was first detected at the end of May and proves particularly destructive, deleting many files and replacing them with a copy of itself.

Among files at risk of being deleted include Word documents, PowerPoint presentations, MP3 files, zip archives and JPEG images.

The symptoms that an infected PC will show include the word 'cetix', which is added to the System Tray and appears next to the time. You will also not be able to run the Task Manager or the Windows Registry Editor.

Panda recommends keeping your PC's anti-virus and firewall products up to date and not opening any Word files from unknown senders.
