I was playin Morrowind on my pc, quit, and about 2 hours later I tried 2 play agen and it jerked like hell. It fell From about 70-90 FPS in the Balmora Mage's Guild to Up and down between 50 and 3,changin between the two every second. NFS HP2 also runs jerky. what could be wrong (i've defragged, scandisk, and i didn't change anythin 2 make it jerk!)

My system:

AMD Athlon XP 1700+
256MB DDR RAM
Gigabyte Maya II Ati Radeon 9700 Pro

Why does it run slow? :'(

Thanks for your time

Welcome to the forum G0dsmack.  I'm probably not the best person to help with your problem, but until one of our resident experts comes along, can I suggest that you clear out all your temporary files as these can have a severe effect on the speed of your computer.  I am presuming that your antvirus software is up to date and that you have run a virus scan to ensure that nothing untoward has entered your machine?

Good news, right on cue an expert has arrived in the shape of Bat 69.

Hi g0dsmack

Welcome to the forum, I hope you find it useful and enjoyable and frequent regularly and join in.

What OS are you running? Are you using the latest drivers for the hardware (graphics card)?

I'm not a gamer, but I'll ask the obvious. Seems you've done the defrag etc, have you checked for virus infection?

Have you checked on Device Manager to see if there are any problems with any of the drivers or hardware?

The next thing would be to reinstall the graphics card driver.

Could this be something to do with the Hardware Acceleration of the Graphics Card?  I seem to remember reading somewhere that reducing acceleration can improve game play, with graphic intensive games.  Other than that, maybe it's a memory issue?  Just guessing.

What screen resolutions are you running at?
Its possible that your resolution is set too high. While a high refresh rate might be ok for viewing the desktop, it might not be able to keep up with the information being given to it from the graphics card.

Also 256Mb of RAM isn't a great amount, if you are running XP, I think this may be a little on the low side. Either way you may want to consider removing some applications from starting up when you boot, and keep the amount to a minimum.

I heard a little program called Rambooster available on CNet www.download.com can help a little in cases like these. But before you go and install this, check some of the other things out first

Hi g0dsmack, Welcome to the forum  :D

A clues here is that your PC has been running at full speed previously and has started running slowly just recently. So it means that something happened during that last session to make the PC slow down occasionally :(

The only thing I can add to Bat69's checklist is that if you are running Window 2000 or XP there may well be something in the Event Log which may explain the problem.

ok, have a look in Device Manager .... Start | Settings | Control Panel | System ... then click on the 'Device Manager' tab

Are there any yellow exclamation marks?

And have you checked out the other things mentioned in the posts above?

Is it just this game you're having trouble with, G0dsmack, or is the performance over the whole PC affected, even when you're not playing the game?
